How to apply Chalk Vinyl

Chalkboard vinyl is one of the best ways to update a blank space that is not normally used for anything. I like it because it can be used for an endless amount of reasons, cleaned and reused. It’s better than having a bunch of notes tapes to the wall or at your desk. This is something that you buy once and you don’t have to worry about it for years. You’ll probably repaint the wall before you need a new chalkboard decal. So with that being said…

Once you decide on a place to put it and you clean the wall and let it dry. I will do a nice step by step with pictures (that should be easy to print if needed).
For this little How-To I am using my pint size deep freeze in my (over packed) mud room and a family of 4 chore chart that got damaged by the machine when it was cutting is out.

First thing, like I said is to pick your place and make sure it’s clean. I use a mix of 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. If you want to use soap and water that is fine because you’re going to let it dry before you place the decal.

Then you want to get some tape and line up where you would like to place it on the wall or wherever you’re going to put it. Once you decide tape down the corners. Make sure you have it pulled tight so when you start to smooth it down the placement doesn’t move.

In the picture you can see that strip of blue tape going across the bottom. You don’t have to do this, but I have found that it helps a lot. With the strip of tape going across the bottom of the decal you can remove the tape off of the top corners and let the decal hang upside down.

Now with it upside down you can peel the paper off of the back without messing up your placement. Peel the paper off slowly so you don’t pull the decal away from the tape on the bottom. This method to the madness can now allow you to smooth down the decal from the bottom up without the decal accidently getting stuck in the wrong place.

So you just want to smooth down the decal working your away from right to left in an upward motion, keeping the same amount pressure on the decal while smoothing it down. While your hand is hold the free edge of the decal keep a little tension on it so as you smooth the decal down there will be less of a chance for air bubbles or misplacement. If you get an air bubble, it’s not a big deal a pin can pop it and you’ll never notice it. chalkboard_collection

Now you have your decal all smoothed down, time to remove the tape on the front of the decal. This is simple and painless. Peel back a corner of the tape, be careful not to put the decal off the wall. If the decal starts to come off, go back over the decal adding more pressure to it and it will stick. Peel the tape off slowly. If you were applying wall lettering or other decals you would be done. But you need to “pre-treat” the chalkboard vinyl first.

To do this all you need to do is take a piece of chalk and rub it on the vinyl. Once you do
that take a chalkboard eraser or rag and wipe it off. It’s ready to use. You can clean the vinyl with a damp rag. You don’t need special cleaners, just a damp water rag.

Now like I said earlier you can follow these same steps for a decal placement. It doesn’t matter if its a wall, appliances, windows, it’s all the same.
